WINWIN YOUNG

WINWIN YOUNG

Winwin Young takes everyday “sights” as the subject and content of her paintings. The many “objects” she depicts are precisely her points of contact and pause with the world. As Hegel once said, “What is well known is not necessarily understood.” The most commonplace objects, scenes, and people are often, ironically, the most easily overlooked under the guise of familiarity.

However, Winwin Young resists this forgetfulness of life. She chooses the ordinary and makes it the enduring force in her work. Combining traditional Chinese gold leaf craftsmanship with oil painting, she uses the most primitive brushstrokes to reveal the power of color, forging a new, equal, and mutually accepting relationship. These objects represent another kind of unrestrained existence, free from definition, reawakening the artist’s gaze from within. They reside quietly and solemnly within the painting, rejecting any symbolism or allegory, allowing the extraordinary within the ordinary to become a continuous flow of time.
