DANYANG SONG

Danyang Song explores emotions and symbiotic relationships through ceramics, inspired by the traditional Chinese philosophy of “ Tian Ren He Yi ” (the harmony of humans and nature). Her work examines the connections between people, nature, and machines, translating intangible feelings into physical forms that reflect the impact of emotions, language, and communication on the body.
She uses coil building, wheel throwing, and 3D printing to explore the relationship between the human body and society. By applying stress to materials, she observes their resistance and transformation, embracing unexpected outcomes. Blending 3D printing with hand-building, she bridges contemporary ceramics with traditional craftsmanship, creating meditative spaces for deep reflection.
Originally from China, Danyang Song holds a Bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University and an MFA in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she also earned a Collegiate Teaching in Art & Design certificate. She has worked at the Institute of Tea Ceremony Art at Tsinghua University and is currently a faculty member and ceramic studio manager at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Her work has been exhibited at renowned institutions and galleries worldwide, including the RISD Museum (Providence), The Blanc Gallery (New York), The Ely Center of Contemporary Art (New Haven), and the Kathryn Schultz Gallery (Boston). Her pieces are also part of Tsinghua University’s collection.
Danyang has received several awards, including the 2024 NCECA Multicultural Fellowship, the Craftsmanship Innovation Award at the 1st Dehua Chinese Traditional Ceramic Biennial, and the Emerging Artist Award from the Cambridge Art Association.
